About the Company
Vaal is the first exhibition and sales gallery based on private capital in Estonia, active from 1990. Our mission is to promote Estonian modern art through intensive and high-level exhibition activities. The gallery's art policy has been led from the start by the curator Eha Komissarov. Vaal tries to assist in the promotion our art life by offering to its audience a diverse choice from the works of both celebrated artists and young artists still at the beginning of their creative career.
The Vaal Gallery is located in an exciting place – the Zelluloos Center in the former paper mill building on Tartu Road is an inspiring environment. Vaal's exhibition hall has been witness to the first steps on the creative path for many promising artists, including Jaan Toomik, Marko Mäetamm, Kaido Ole and Ene-Liis Semper. In its fifteen years of activity, the gallery has hosted close to 250 exhibitions. In addition to modern Estonian art, Vaal has also presented the exhibitions of world-famous names like Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Jean Miró and Paul Delvaux.
In its sales activity, Vaal adheres to the principle of offering the art lovers a choice of both Estonian art's golden collection and the exciting samples of modern art. Vaal organizes auctions in spring and autumn, during which many important works from Estonian art history have found a new owner. The auctions have sold, for example, the works of Eduard Wiiralt, Konrad Mägi, Kristjan Raud, Nikolai Triik, Paul Burman and Villem Ormisson etc.
Besides the gallery's main activity, Vaal tries to contribute to the development of Estonian art life, helping to highlight the fascinating finds of our art landscape. Between 1992-2001, Vaal issued the annual prize Harpuun for young artists who had caught attention with exceptional works. In the last years, we have chosen arranging youth art camps as our form of support, which we do in cooperation with the Estonian Academy of Arts, the University of Tartu and the Tartu Art College. Vaal has from the start also tried to introduce Estonian art at various international fairs. Our diverse selection of modern art has been presented at the world-renowned fairs in Cologne and Barcelona.
